Few words create more anxiety among new bioactive keepers than:

Mold

Discovering white fuzz on leaf litter, substrate, wood, or food often leads to immediate concern. Many keepers assume mold means something is seriously wrong with the enclosure.

In reality, mold is one of the most common and often most misunderstood aspects of bioactive husbandry.

The truth is that mold is a natural part of decomposition. In young bioactive setups especially, small mold blooms are often expected as the ecosystem establishes itself.

The key is learning to distinguish between normal mold growth and mold that indicates an underlying husbandry problem.

What Is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that feeds on organic matter.

In nature, mold plays an important role by helping break down:
