Sugar
Phidippus regius • Orange Line / “Dragon’s Breath”
Wild-Caught Rescue • Founding Brood Matron
Sugar holds a particularly special place within the Tiny Coven.
One of our very first Brood Matrons, Sugar is a beautiful Orange Line Regal Jumping Spider, often referred to in the hobby as “Dragon’s Breath.” With her warm russet abdomen, golden markings, soft silvery coat, and flashes of violet at her chelicerae, she is every bit as striking as she is endearing.
Sugar's story, however, began long before she came into our care.
She arrived at Tiny Coven Jumpers as a wild-caught rescue, already gravid and carrying the beginnings of a generation we knew nothing about. Rather than allow that uncertain beginning to define her, we gave her a quiet place to settle, plenty of food, careful husbandry, and the freedom to simply be a spider.
In time, Sugar began building.
And then came the egg sacs.
She has since laid multiple sacs in our care, making her not only one of the earliest mothers of the Coven, but the beginning of a bloodline that will forever carry a little piece of her story.
Her offspring are raised here with their history known and recorded, allowing a spider who began as an unknown wild rescue to become the foundation of a carefully documented captive-raised line.
Sugar is more than breeding stock to us. She is an individual animal whose welfare matters regardless of what she produces. Her place among our Brood Matrons honors both the babies she has brought into the world and the little wild spider who unexpectedly found her way into the Coven.
Bloodline: Mama Sugar • Orange Line
From one tiny wild mother, a whole new branch of the Coven began.
