One of the most unsettling moments for any keeper is discovering tiny creatures moving through an enclosure that were never intentionally introduced.
Suddenly there are tiny white specks on the substrate.
Small insects appear beneath the leaf litter.
Mysterious organisms gather around food dishes.
The immediate assumption is often:
"My enclosure is infested."
Fortunately, not every hitchhiker is harmful.
In fact, many organisms found in bioactive habitats are either harmless or beneficial. Learning to identify common pests—and understanding when action is actually necessary—can prevent unnecessary panic and help maintain a healthier ecosystem.
The goal is not to create a sterile environment.
The goal is to understand which organisms belong and which ones may require intervention.
Why Pests Appear
